And in many ways, perhaps so much so to the point where the other Megarangers can’t and will not keep up. The episode delves into showing how Kouichirou is perhaps without a doubt the most competent and responsible of all the Megarangers (I mean, he IS the leader after all). And Chisato won’t let this slide in the slightest, as she proceeds to kick some bad guy butt as payback! It gets pretty emotionally intense, but the end of the episode is a very nice optimistic breather.įollowing Shun’s first focus ep, we now have Kouichirou’s first focus ep. All this climaxes as we reach the conflict of the episode where the girl sadly stumbles into Shibolena’s next evil plan, and everything Chisato worked so hard for the girl literally burns to flames. Later on, you can see that Chisato isn’t the least bit unfocused, as she immediately catches onto her friends following her around. You can tell this moment is supposed to be a great time for Chisato, and she’s putting her heart into ensuring that things go greater than great. Eri Tanaka expresses this genuine joy and excitement in making the cake and getting ready for the girl’s birthday party, but without going over the top or brainless. While getting through her final year at high school, we see in this ep, how she goes out of her way to make a very special birthday cake for a girl she knows. Chisato to me has always been a character whom while almost out of High School, was already aspiring to take life on to bigger and better places, while still enjoying the now. Chisato’s actress, Eri Tanaka completely makes every little scene a worthwhile moment. And I’d say this ep is one of the main reasons why. On top of that, his chemistry with Kenta really adds a unique dynamic, where Shun can bond with the knucklehead, despite being annoyed by his antics. Matsukaze really manages to carry across that Shun is not stiff as cardboard or a robot, and brings this layer of relaxation to the character, showing that he’s a person who can think and not just some 2D archetype (I can’t count how many times toku has goofed up the “jerk” character, cause the actor can’t emote anything other than a blank grumpy expression). And a lot of it I owe to his actor, Masaya Matsukaze. before you can scream “Boring!” I think this episode establishes how Shun can be an enjoyable character who’s worth the time to follow. Shun on the surface sounds like another one of these millions of toku (and anime) characters who’s a jerk, but surprise surprise, he’s actually not all that bad!…. A guy who dreams to become a graphics design programmer, with an aloof attitude which allows him to not sweat some of the things in life, yet can come off blunt and even a jerk to others. The episode is basically an introduction to the kind of person Shun is. The first Shun focus ep (co-starring Kenta). The world of Megaranger as a result feels strangely familiar and relatable, yet bizarrely feels kinda like a fantasy world too. The show has an optimistic atmosphere, trying to showcase the goods and bads of technology, and how the youths of today (or even 20 years ago) would handle that. What stands out to me about Megaranger’s episodes is how each episode follows the lives of our five high school students, who live in a world which was now booming with the then brand new technology. I feel Megaranger in a lot of ways manages to stay consistent in that regard. So while I found a lot of very unique and awesome episodes in Megaranger, I admit, it was kinda hard for me to really label a specific 10 as by any means better than the rest. Megaranger for me is a show where a lot of it’s episodes are good, simply for just handling it’s themes, setting, and characters all in a similar respectable and exciting manner. To celebrate the upcoming release of Megaranger’s US DVD releases, as well as the show’s 20th anniversary, gonna do a Top 10 Episodes post for the show (multi-parters will be counted as one)! I love Megaranger a lot, but to my surprise, I actually had some trouble picking out 10 episodes from the series.
